Vivek Bald, Director and Producer
Vivek Bald is a New York based filmmaker and music producer. His previous documentary, Taxi-vala/Auto-biography, chronicled the lives, experiences and political activism of South Asian immigrant taxi drivers in New York City. Taxi-vala premiered at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1994, was broadcast on New York's WNET-TV in 1996, and has screened at festivals and other venues throughout North America and in Australia and Japan.
Producing and performing music under the name Siraiki, Bald is also co-founder of the groundbreaking Mutiny club night in New York City. Over the course of its six years, from 1997-2003, the Mutiny club night not only introduced NYC audiences to the sounds of South Asian Britain - hosting many of the artists featured in Mutiny: Asians Storm British Music - but also created critical mass for the rise of local South Asian DJs and musicians working at the cutting edge of electronic dance music. As Siraiki, Bald has collaborated in the studio and on stage with Asian Dub Foundation's Chandrasonic, fellow Mutiny residents Navdeep and Zakhm, underground hip-hop producer Mike Ladd, and New York electronica icon, DJ Spooky. He is currently producing a DJ mix CD and a series of original tracks to be released later this year on DJ Spooky's Synchronic Records label.
